Moreover, synthetic rope slings can be used in varying temperatures, including saltwater and chemically active environments. Check with the manufacturer before purchasing a sling, as some slings are unsuitable for harsh chemicals or UV light environments.

Corrosion:

Wire ropes are prone to corrosion, and as such, the weight of the ropes is increased. Corrosion occurs as a result of two factors: atmospheric oxygen and saltwater. Steel that is exposed to saltwater, for example, degrades faster than steel that is inland. Furthermore, chemicals used to maintain the ropes can contribute to corrosion. Rust will not only fill in the holes, but it will also spread cracks and eventually destroy the ropes.

While there are numerous ways to prevent heat damage to lifting rope slings, a few things you should know can help keep them in top condition. First, wire rope slings should be lubricated. This lubricant prevents corrosion and reduces wear and tear from friction and abrasion. Also, wire rope slings should be kept dry. If you store your lifting rope sling on the ground will trap moisture and hasten corrosion. Corrosion may be hard to detect, but it usually accompanies pitting.

There are several things to remember when maintaining the quality of lifting rope slings. In addition to their weight capacity, slings should be inspected for visible signs of wear and tear. If they are damaged, replace them immediately. Check for knots, twists, and other damages, and consider adding protective corner pads. Store slings in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight.
